What Do You Want To…

Become an expert in? According to an article I read about Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, if you practice something for 10,000 hours or more you become an expert. Don’t you just love little facts like these.

Writers are given a little more slack by Thomas H Uzzell who said that when it comes to writing, a writer will need to write 1 million words of fiction then he/she will truly be able to write and impress readers.  (Go on you know you want to try to work out how many you’ve written since you started writing, 🙂  ) Let me know your answers if you have work it out, I’d love to know.

When read these facts I couldn’t resist trying to calculate for fun how long it would apparently take my eldest to become an expert with the piano, practicing for half an hour a day the answer was 50 years! Thinking it might be off-putting, I’ve decided to keep this funny fact to myself.

Some people do find facts like these discouraging, personally I love them. They’re fun and I understand the message that there trying to give which is, to be good at anything you have to practice, a lot.

So what do you think, do you like facts like these? Did you manage to resist trying to work out your word count?
